Tradition around the table
A community lantern-making workshop at New Water Margin in Derby brought Chinese craft traditions to the table. Red paper materials, gold motifs and decorative tassels were laid out alongside teapots and cups, ready for an informal shared activity.
From materials to a finished lantern
The original footage captures participants working around the table and sharing what they have made. Red paper and decorative details take shape as a lantern; a finished piece is then held up for the camera. Making something by hand invites a closer look at the colours, patterns and small details of a festive tradition.
An everyday setting for cultural exchange
The warmth of the workshop lies in these shared moments: making, talking and showing a finished piece to others. The lantern provides a starting point for exploring Chinese festive culture, while sitting together creates a natural setting for community connection. UK Culture and Trade Exchange hopes to encourage understanding through more activities that people can experience together.
