Familiar words, a London setting
“Poetry Across the Sea” brought together Chinese student representatives in the UK for a poetry exchange. Gathering outdoors in London, participants held their scripts and read together. Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament form the backdrop to a moment rooted in Chinese language and culture, yet unmistakably part of life in Britain.
A reason to gather
The footage moves from a group reading to a smaller gathering in the same London setting. Together, these moments capture the shared expression at the heart of the activity. Poetry offers a way to voice affection for home and to find connection through familiar words while living overseas. The distance is real; so is the sense of belonging created by reading together.
Culture through participation
An informal gathering can bring literature into everyday life abroad. For UK Culture and Trade Exchange, language, the arts and shared participation provide starting points for cultural understanding. We hope to encourage more opportunities for people to listen, share and connect through culture.
